Movie Review - Marriage Story
MARRIAGE STORY
"Marriage Story" is a drama directed by Noah Baumbach and produced by Netflix. It stars Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson in the lead roles. The film depicts the genuine pain experienced during a divorce. It has received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Picture. Additionally, the film has won an award for "Best Supporting Actress" at the Critics' Choice Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and Academy Awards.
Adam Driver plays Charlie Barber, a successful theatre director, while Scarlett Johansson portrays his wife, Nicole. The movie opens with Nicole listing the characteristics of Charlie, describing him as hardworking, funny, somewhat selfish but very helpful, and someone who is willing to listen to her frustrations. Following this, the film showcases Nicole and Charlie supporting each other in various ways, such as when Nicole cuts both her husband's and their son Henry's hair. Charlie primarily handles the household chores.
As the couple attends a mediation session before filing for divorce, the story unfolds to reveal the events that led to their separation. Nicole accuses Charlie of infidelity, which he denies. Subsequently, she initiates legal proceedings to determine custody of their son, Henry. The movie culminates with Charlie losing the custody battle but being granted visitation rights for a few days with Henry. In a heartwarming concluding scene, Charlie and Henry share a moment that evokes memories of the past when Nicole ties Charlie's shoelace after it comes undone.
The title accurately reflects the beginning and end of a marriage, encapsulating the grief and joy that come with it. The director presents the story convincingly, and the actors deliver powerful performances.
In my opinion, it is a must-watch film for everyone, not just for those who are married.😊
3/5 Stars.
